In each grade level we will be working through specific concepts in music. All students will play some of the musical instruments throughout the school year. Fourth graders will learn recorders during the Spring semester before they begin band or orchestra in fifth grade. Fifth and Sixth graders will get the chance to learn ukuleles later in the year.
There is an approach to music called Orff-Schulwerk. This approach emphasizes the use of Orff instruments (xylophones, metallophones, glockenspiels, and unpitched percussion instruments), recorders, and movement in music classes. I have completed two levels of training in this approach and plan to incorporate these in my classes.
In every class students have the opportunity to sing their name. This gives the class a chance to warm up and stretch their voices while also allowing individuals to experiment with their voice and make decisions about how to sing their name.
This is my first year teaching and I am so excited to be at Val Vista Lakes Elementary School! I received my Bachelor's Degree in 2013 from the University of Arizona and am currently finishing up my Master's Degree from the University of North Texas. Both of my degrees are in music performance with a focus on harp. I began playing the harp when I was 10 years old and eventually began teaching private lessons on the instrument. Through this, I would who much I enjoyed teaching music. I spent last year pursuing my teaching certification through ASU. It is already apparent to me who lucky I am to be teaching at this school at working with these colleagues and students!
